Elveormen, the mythical river serpent of Curin
« on: February 26, 2021, 01:29:45 PM »
Written in high-calradic page from father Wilfrids beastiary - dated back to the last centuries of the age of heroes.

Deep within the basins and rivers lurk plenty of dangers to the fisherman, but the worst nightmare of such man would be the River Serpent. Descendands of Ortysis and sworn enemies of Rhudan, these foul crossed beasts slither on the muddy floors of his domain. When the crossed primordial titans of the old world were cast back into the abyss and their foul nests were burnt down, some litters would take to the smaller water basins of the Makers realm. While the seas were still home to gargantuan horrors no fleet could ever vanquish, off-spring of such would sometimes wander far from the abbyssal depths far beyond Rhudans sight, into the realm of men. Their eternal hunger, never sated by the life in the rivers and lakes and their shores. These beasts, called River Serpents or Lake Wyrms, would terrorise every fishing populace that dared to settle near their nests. Vile maws, like a fishing net, capable of devouring entire schools of fish. And their huge, scaly and wretched bodies would slither on the bottom of river bodies, carving them deeper and deeper into the earth. These abominations, learning how to hide from the Maker in piles of mud and gravel, would ambush fishermen that unbeknownst to them ventured too far into their hunting grounds. It is said that they have their nests in underwater caves, deep enough to almost reach the domain of Ortysis, their hatred for sunlight drives them into hiding from it. The only thing that is bigger than their cunning is their eternally unsatiable hunger. As long as they can devour, they will grow. Only the most cunning of knights know how to bait these beasts, but none of them live to tell the tale. As they are abominations of Ortysis, they can heed the dark calls of him and his most powerful children, luckily none dare to oppose the Maker and his children in such way. Be wary sailor and fisherman, be wary of empty lakes and foul rivers, be wary of the moonlight on the water surface.

A readable page, written in an ancient language closely resembling nordic, from the foul, almost destroyed Chant of [...] - author unknown, probably a compilation of very heretical prayers dating from the age of heroes, to the beggining of the age of man.

Great lord of [...], protector of the waters.
Birthing maw of man, and the tail that gives mercy.
Terror of Curinus, saviour of [...]
Strike down those the Beholder deems unworthy
And let us pass the rainbow bridge.
   Give us strength [...]
And strike fear into the hearts of our enemies!
For we will sate your hunger.

Page from the ancient stories and legends of Curin, regarding the River Serpent and it's cultists.

Long before Vayejeg was built, probably during the age of heroes, a large tribe of Makerist fishermen was settling down. They deemed the basin a good place to settle down, as fish was in abundance.  But when they cut down the trees to build their houses and pallisades, they gained the attention of a neighbouring tribe. Unluckily for the Makerists, those were nordic cultists who worshipped a very, very dangerous creature. A river dwelling beast, asleep untill the nords began conflict with the settlers.
After the first few skirmishes, the nords would begin foul war rituals. According to the Makerist scouts, they dumped corpses into a body of water in a deep hole. Upon further inspection, when the cave was empty, all that was left of the corpses was chunks of gore floating to the edges of the pond. The settlement suffered from hunger soon after, the fish would stop taking the baits, only pieces and bones of fish catching in the nets.
After the Makerists suffering due to famine, war and the sole terror of something lurking in the waters of Curin, they called upon the Divi and Maker himself to aid them. A legendary hero, his name lost to the ages, arrived to slay the beast. Him leading an assault on the barbarians led to the destruction of tribe, with few survivors scattering around the region. With the protectors of the beast dealt with, he could begin his hunt. Only he could participate in such divine quest, due to the cunning nature of the monster. Some say he succeeded, as the abomination from the river soon stopped showing signs of itself, but there was no trace left of the hero himself...

Parts of the Makerist mythology from the region around and in Curin.

And Rhudan finished shaping the waters inside Diaths realm, after life was breathed into the land and surface of the water. The abyss would soak within the deepest parts of the earth into the mortal world from below, as it was the closest to the veil. Caverns would crack inside the stone Diath shaped himself, and on the deepest floors of them, horrors would brood and crawl sluggishly. Once these ruptures have opened up from the inside onto the surfaces, water would seep down to the bottom. These crossed beings would learn to swim, expanding through the depths of the caverns and copying the holy gift of life the Maker then twisting it.  These crossed beings would mate with the deepest primordial beings deep underground and create the evil abominations that would become sworn enemies of the Makers children. These creatures would sometimes make their way out of the underground into the depths of the oceans, they would devour the animals there and become collossal sea monsters. Roaming the depths and sometimes their tendrils or vile maws would reach the surface, destroying any fleets or ships that would cross the paths of these beasts appendages. Their offspring would roam seas, lakes and even rivers, although they'd bemuch smaller in size. These crossed abominations would mostly be slain by the Divi and their children, as they had no right to tresspass on the Makers realm, but it is said that they still dwell far from the Makers sight.

[...]

Elveormen, the devouring River Serpent terrorising the inland water basins beyond the shore of Sargoth. This beast roamed the caves below Curin, sometimes swimming to the rivers and lakes of the basin to feed on Makerist flesh. The crossed monster was so large, it became the river itself when it swam. It's poison able to melt bone, its fangs capable of tearing through the best of armours and its scales iridescent with colours from the abyss itself. Worshipped by barbarians who were unwelcome to the people led by the Divi's heroes, it was cast back into the depths of the abyss by the Divi.

Amice, and very much alife Horace Lumiere are rumoured to have caught offspring of this serpent just a mere year ago - during one of their fishing trips! And then feed it to the Airleyn people, cursing them forever more.
